Nail Tales — what does ‘no one special’ mean….

Lies vary. One type of lie is ‘lying by omission’. An example;
Sometime in my past…. I knew a man as an intermittent colleague. I knew nothing about his personal life. One day after a meeting, out of nowhere, he invited me to lunch. I accepted figuring we would continue our professional type discussion. It was a nice lunch — good conversation and he asked if he could see me again. I thought, “Why not.” So we met again for lunch – and he expressed an interest in seeing me again socially — at which time I asked him if he was dating anyone. His response was “No one special.”
I figured, “OK, he goes on dates — but he doesn’t have a girlfriend.”
Where is the lie? He said, “No one special” omitting the fact that he had a live-in girlfriend who at that moment in time — didn’t exist.
I eventually found out about the girlfriend, or vice versa. It wasn’t a happy time for me or the girlfriend. More on that some other time.
Rumor has it the man still pretends the girlfriend doesn’t exist. I don’t miss him.

Some time ago, when I was living in Philadelphia in an apartment with my roomate Marie, she fell in love. She met this man of her dreams at an event in NY. They had a few drinks, shared stories and he seemed nice enough so they started to date. Despite the fact that he was gone a great deal–his visits were always pretty short, the planning was always complicated, and he appeared at odd times, she thought he was fabulous. He was a pilot for an international airline and he explained that this was why he was always gone or everything (all their plans) had to be last minute. I didn’t like him much because he had no sense of humor but he brought, or sent us elaborate gifts from all over the world — so who was I to complain. As it happened, Marie’s mother called and confessed to me that she thought he was creepy — she thought something was a little off. Anyway, when he asked Marie to marry him, her mother hired a private detective to see what he was all about. It turned out that he was not a pilot, although he worked at LaGuardia in some menial position and occasionally saw a plane. In addition, he had a wife and four kids. Marie was devestated, it was sure a kick in the head. The good news is that she went home to recover and met Bobby, to who she married and is living happily ever after.
